La Universidad de Antioquia reconoció los 70 años de trayectoria creativa y experimentación en las artes plásticas del artista manizalita David Manzur, otorgándole el título «honoris causa» de doctor en Artes. Su obra abstracta se ha enfocado en los últimos años en resaltar el deterioro del planeta.
Con 94 años el pintor recibe este reconocimiento por su ininterrumpida creación de arte en el que se destacan formas anatómicas, arquitectónicas y geométricas; además de árboles, cuerpos de mujer, caballeros quijotescos, instrumentos musicales, figuras religiosas, bodegones y teteras, con influencias en movimientos artísticos como el barroco, el constructivismo, el expresionismo abstracto y el cubismo.
Según el profesor Fernández Uribe, citado por la UdeA “se advierte la dimensión coreográfica y ornamental de Manzur, (…) estaba interesado en las formas más líricas y generales del arte y que su pintura nunca sería honda ni mucho menos dramática, (…) ese es el espacio en el que David Manzur se deleita, al no pretender una profundidad dramática, sino dedicado al juego con los elementos que acaparan su atención, con los que generó su sello personal”.
En el acta de este reconocimiento dado a Manzur se destacan los aportes artísticos del artista desde su capacidad de autocrítica e inventiva: “A través de su fuerza poética y creativa, el trabajo de David Manzur, más allá de sus sobresalientes manejos técnicos, se adentra en la reflexión acerca del ser humano y en sus dimensiones espirituales, místicas, históricas y poéticas, sin dejar de lado la presencia de la incertidumbre, el hermetismo y la fugacidad de la existencia”.

La Universidad de Antioquia resalta el interés del artista por temas ambientales, ejemplo de ello es la serie Ciudades oxidadas del año 2011, “compuesta por 48 pinturas en gran formato, sobre las que el artista, en diversas entrevistas, ha reconocido que hay retazos de su niñez en Guinea Ecuatorial, y acercamientos al tema de la belleza, más allá de los cánones que se le ha impuesto desde diferentes disciplinas”, finaliza.
La formación académica internacional de Manzur incluye experiencias en el Instituto Pratt y en Art Students League, de Nueva York, Estados Unidos.
